Vietnam is around 1,000 miles long, so the climate varies from temperate to tropical as you move from north to south. The best time to visit tends to be from November to April, when the rainfall is at its lowest and the temperatures are pleasant.

March to August is also a great time to visit the central region — expect fewer crowds, lower prices at hotels, and sunny spells.

The weather in Vietnam can be split by region. The south sees hot and dry weather from November to April, with temperatures hovering around the 25 to 35°C (77 to 95°F) mark and rainfall at its highest from June, July, and August.

The central part of the country experiences hot and dry weather from January to August, with temperatures often reaching 30°C (86°F). During the winter months, the rainfall increases and you can sometimes get typhoons in the months of October and November.

The north of the country generally sees cooler temperatures from November to April, with temperatures averaging 17 to 22°C (62.6 to 71.6°F). Summer lasts from May to October, when temperatures are high and there is plenty of rainfall. Expect it to be humid, particularly in July, August, and September.

It is customary in Vietnam to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service. Tipping is expected, though not compulsory, and shows an expression of satisfaction with the people helping you on your tour.

There are several times during the trip where there's an opportunity to tip the local guides or drivers we use. You may do this individually, or your CEO will offer to collect the money and tip as a group. Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from USD $1-2 per person, per day depending on the quality and length of the service.

Tipping your G Adventures CEO is also very much appreciated. The amount is entirely a personal preference; however, as a guideline, USD $10-15 per person, per week is our recommendation in the region. However, if you felt your CEO did an especially outstanding job, any additional amount is always welcome.

Vietnam has fantastic internet and Wi-Fi access all over the country, particularly in towns and cities. When you’re in more rural areas, expect it to be more limited.

There are many ATM machines that accept both Visa and Mastercard, but these are limited to major cities. Check with your bank to see how much you may be charged for withdrawals — consider bringing cash in USD too.

Vietnamese is the official language of Vietnam, though English is increasingly spoken here too. You’ll also find pockets that speak French, Khmer, and Chinese here too.

Drinking the tap water in Vietnam is generally not recommended, as this is a major cause of travelers getting sick here. Bottled water is widely available and is cheap to buy too.

Vietnam is generally a very safe country to visit, but like with any other country in the world, there’s a risk of petty crime and theft in larger cities. Be careful when riding on motorcycles and scooters too.
